UX patterns for registration

I led the redesign of The Washington Post’s entire suite of games, further transforming a fragmented set of legacy products and original games into a cohesive, modern, and deeply engaging experience.

With a lean, passionate team (a part-time product manager, two developers, and me as the sole designer and part-time product manager), I created a flexible design system that allowed us to manage and scale the suite efficiently. The system supported both shared patterns across games and distinct visual identities for each title, enabling faster development and a more polished, unified experience.

We added highly requested features, including:

  • The ability to play past weeks' puzzles

  • Dynamic score tracking across games

  • Custom celebratory animations and visual flourishes

  • Unique gameplay enhancements for each title

Each game underwent iterative user testing to validate design decisions and optimize playability. Rapid prototyping and internal playtesting enabled us to move quickly, delivering the fully redesigned suite and dozens of new features in just six months.

The result: a more replayable and rewarding experience that significantly strengthened The Post’s games offering and laid the foundation for continued rapid growth.

I really love the addition that you can go back and play earlier games! That’s what I’ve been wishing for.
